Deborah Starr, Ph.D.

Dr. Starr is a professor of Narrative Medicine at Columbia University. The Narrative Medicine Approach is a collection of progressive techniques and unique skill sets based upon linguistical, ontological, and literary explorations of the human experience. Drawing on her extensive experience in narrative consulting for healthcare organizations, conflict resolution, and corporate dynamics, Deborah is a culture change catalyst for communication, team building, and solving complex problems through strategic innovation.

Utilizing a wide range of methodologies to enhance communication, motivation, and teamwork, Deborah has traveled globally as a corporate consultant and trainer, working with CEOs and senior management of major organizations including McKinsey, NASA, Facebook, Pfizer, EY, Toshiba, Bank of America, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Johnson & Johnson, Warner Brothers, Mattel, and many others.

Deborah spent a decade in litigation consulting, where she researched and advised top law firms to produce winning results on multi-billion-dollar trials. She also lectured on the influence and impact of language for a wide range of organizations, including the American Bar Association, Association of Business Trial Lawyers, United Nations Development Program, and the International Law Forum.

Dr. Starr holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from International College, an M.S. in Neuroscience from UC San Diego, and an M.A. in Narrative Medicine from Columbia University. She is also a licensed marriage and family therapist, a restorative justice facilitator, and a certified mediator with the New York City courts.
